I was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in 2018 at age 58. I was told that 70% of my plasma cells were cancerous. At the time, I was the Head Football Coach and Business Teacher at a High School in Wilmington, North Carolina. I was diagnosed in September and made the decision to finish the season with my team. It was surreal at the time, not knowing what to do, and where I needed to go. My wife and I decided to keep the news private until the end of the football season, when I would have more clarity on the next steps for my diagnosis. After much prayer and research, I believe God sent me to MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas to see Dr. Orlowski, one of the world’s leading specialists in Multiple Myeloma. Robert Z. Orlowski, M.D., Ph.D., is Chairman, Ad Interim, Director of Myeloma, and Professor of Medicine in the Departments of Lymphoma/Myeloma and Experimental Therapeutics, Division of Cancer Medicine, where he is board-certified in medical oncology. At the end of the season, I flew out to MD Anderson to see Dr. Orlowski. I was already feeling the negative mental and physical effects of the disease. I went straight into treatment, including chemotherapy and stem cell transplant. Treatment came with unforeseen obstacles, including pneumonia and other serious complications. With the care, knowledge and advancements made by my team of doctors and through extensive treatment I was finally able to return home in 2019, in remission.
